School History

St Kieran's Catholic School, Mount Isa, has a rich history in the West.

1959

The Christian Brothers arrive in Mt Isa to establish a college in the town. A new school and a residence for the brothers is constructed on the same block of land as the Good Shepherd Church, and both buildings are blessed and opened by Bishop Hugh Ryan in September.

1960

In February classes begin at St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College for boys. This school serves as a namesake for St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School when it opens in 1985.

1961

At St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College secondary classes are commenced, necessitating the construction of extra classrooms for teaching of science. Another brother joins the staff of St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College to serve as a secondary teacher.

1984

Due to a major restructure of Catholic education in Mount Isa, St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College closes and the school becomes the site of the new Mount Isa Catholic High School. This new co-educational high school combines the resources of St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College and San Jose Girls College.

1985

On 4 February, St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School is opened on Short Street. The Sisters of St Joseph operate the new school, which takes its name from the recently closed St Kieran’s Christian Brothers College.

1987

The Sisters of St Joseph withdraw from St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School, which comes under lay administration.

1995

Pre-school classes commence at St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School.

1996

The boarding school at Julia Creek is closed and the dormitory building is brought to St. Kieran’s Catholic Primary School on the back of a truck. The dormitory is erected and renovated to provide St Kieran’s with an office, toilet, shower, kitchen and a large room for drama lessons.

1997

On 18 March, Bishop Raymond Benjamin blesses and opens a new administration block, library and preschool at St Kieran’s Catholic Primary School.
